Utility company officials could not immediately say why the power went out in Ocean County, but there was speculation that the region's high demand for electricity due to the heat wave may have been a contributing factor.

Jersey Central Power & Light said electricity should be restored in the Lakewood area between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Monday.

At about 7:15 p.m., Lakewood News Network reported there had been a bus crash on New Hampshire Avenue after a traffic signal went dark, but that all the occupants on the bus were OK.
